Do Rope Chains Break Easily?
Rope Chains have been popular for more than several decades. One iconic image that stands out to me is the group photo of Run-DMC, an American hip hop group from Hollis, Queens, New York, all wearing (what seems to be) 10K yellow gold rope chains as thick as 20.0mm. Surreal.
Today, you have many choices when shopping for rope chains. Regular or diamond cut, hollow or solid, and 10K or 14K gold are among some of the options offered by many jewelers. Oh, and I forgot to mention that you can get them in Yellow, Rose, White or Tri-Gold colors. Choices ... right?
No matter the choice, the number one question we always receive is, “Do your rope chains break easily?”
Yes ... and ... no. How durable a rope chain is depends on its type and thickness.
Let me break it down for you. The following info is based off of my experience and the experiences of our loyal supporters who have purchased our 10K and 14K Yellow Gold Hollow Diamond Cut Rope Chains.
Rope Chain Durability
For our 10K Hollow Diamond Cut Rope Chains, we start from 2.0mm thickness and go all the way up to 10.0mm thickness. For our 14K Hollow Diamond Cut Rope Chains, we go from 3.0mm to 5.0mm. You'd literally be looking like a mini Jam Master Jay with a 10.0mm rope chain around your neck!
If this is your first time buying a rope chain, I personally recommend going with the medium size of 3.0mm. Why? Because from experience, most people will unintentionally get their 2.0mm or 2.5mm rope chains caught on something. The tug on the chain will both snap and break it easily. Also, most people expect to feel some weight around their necks when wearing a Fine Real Gold Chain. Honestly, the 2.0mm and 2.5mm widths are so thin and light that they hardly weigh anything around your neck.
But, when you go from 3.0mm and thicker, you will feel that weight around your neck, whether the chain is a solid or hollow diamond cut rope chain. Quick side note (shameless plug), we have not received any feedback other than 5 Star Reviews for our 3.0mm and thicker diamond cut rope chains. Rope chains that are 3.0mm or thicker are a lot more durable than chains that are 2.5mm or thinner. The thicker chains are definitely strong and durable enough for everyday wear and will not break so easily. CAUTION: This is not to say that you should intentionally pull on it with all your might, just to see if it will break. You will regret it.
